Support Artist Residencies

And Bring life to a Rural Cretan Village

We are incredibly excited that Mudhouse is now an official 501c3 non-profit organization, and 100% of donations received will go to artist fellowships and to grow our programs at Mudhouse.

This year the cost of the residency is stated on the website to reflect the actual cost of the residency, though every artist attending will receive a partial fellowship, and at least three artists chosen by committee will receive full scholarships based on the quality of their work.

Please consider a year end donation to help us meet our goals, every amount helps!

“Why should I donate to send an artist to a residency program in Crete?”

We were asked this question at the gala fundraiser last year by a gentleman who, after asking that question, proceeded to successfully bid on three artworks!

Here was our answer: Through cultural immersion, providing a rich historical context, coupled with the isolation and the inspiration from the natural environment, the contemporary artists who are residents have an opportunity to enrich their professional practice as well as bring fresh cultural life to this remote community. The Mudhouse Residency provides opportunities for collaboration between the artists, as well as collaboration between artists and the members of the village community.

Our residency program also supports a local economy and brings life to a formerly deserted village. Local residents look forward to our exhibitions and presentations, and meeting the international artists. Our meals at the Kafeneio are carefully planned and prepared by Christina, a talented cook and mother of two, who inherited the Kafeneio from her mother and grandmother. Our program keeps Christina in business and provides incentive to the villagers to keep Agios Ioannis alive and well.

Many of our alumni have found their experience at Mudhouse to have a significant effect on their artistic practice and direction of their work. Some have found the experience so valuable that they have chosen to return again, and we are especially happy to see returning alumni! This past summer we had artists from India, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea join us this summer for the first time. The atmosphere at Mudhouse provides for a unique intergenerational exchange of cultures, ideas, art practices and professional strategies.

Through our fundraising efforts, every artist attending will receive a partial fellowship, and at least three artists chosen by committee will receive full scholarships based on the quality of their work.

We offer an unforgettable experience in the isolated village of Agios Ioannis, high on a mountain with incredible views of the Libyan Sea. The artists' time is their own, to focus on their art practice and explore the rich history of southern Crete and the Minoan civilization.

Your donation is tax deductible, and you will receive a thank you with our 501c3 ID.

We also have some special thank you gifts!

For a $50 donation you will receive a Mudhouse tote bag. For a $100 donation you will receive two handmade Raki cups, made by board member and alum Kathy Kearns.

We concluded phase one last year; the creation of the non profit and our initial fundraising efforts, to support three full fellowships the summer of 2022. We want to thank all of you for your contribution to this process, your generous donations of time, artwork and support for the benefit party and fundraisers, and your continued interest in the future of the Mudhouse Residency.

Σας ευχαρυστουμε!
